In order to encourage girls to think about careers in STEM based environments (science, technology, engineering and maths), 15 MAT girls from year 10 attended a 'Girls into engineering' visit to Viridor Energy Recovery Facility in Cardiff. The company accept household waste from most LAs from across Wales, reducing Landfill from 52% in 2010, to 20% today. They incinerate the waste and produce enough electricity to power 50,000 homes.
The event was delivered by an inspirational female engineer who introduced various engineering challenges. They also received a site tour and were encouraged to consider a career in engineering.
There were links to the GCSE Science curriculum and ESDGC. A wonderful opportunity for our More Able and Talented pupils.
The event was organised by Mr Price, Leader of Science at Pen y Dre High School.
